Army Chief Issues Stern Warning to Pakistan Over Terrorism, Cites “Geography or History” Choice

Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi issued a stern warning to Pakistan, stating it must choose between “geography or history” if it continues to harbour terrorists. Speaking at Manekshaw Centre, he referenced Operation Sindoor, India’s precision strikes after the Pahalgam attack, and highlighted the 88-hour military escalation.

In a sharply worded message directed at Islamabad, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi on Saturday stated that if Pakistan continues to harbour terrorists and conduct operations against India, it will have to decide whether it wants to remain “part of geography or history.”

Speaking at an interactive session organised by “Uniform Unveiled” at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, the Army Chief was responding to a question on the Indian Army’s potential response if circumstances similar to those that led to Operation Sindoor last year were to arise again.

General Dwivedi reiterated his earlier position, stating, “If you have heard me earlier, what I have said... that Pakistan, if it continues to harbour terrorists and operate against India, then they have to decide whether they want to be part of geography or history or not.”

His remarks were delivered at the event titled “Sena Samwad” and came just days after India and the Indian Armed Forces marked the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor.

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 last year in response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack. During the operation, Indian forces carried out precision strikes targeting multiple terrorist infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Following the initial strikes, Pakistan launched retaliatory offensives against India. All subsequent counter-offensives conducted by Indian forces were also carried out under the framework of Operation Sindoor.

The military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours lasted for nearly 88 hours before both sides reached an understanding on the evening of May 10, bringing the escalation to a halt.

The Army Chief’s remarks underline India’s continued strategic posture on cross-border terrorism and reaffirm the country’s operational response doctrine in the event of renewed hostilities.
